Skiing anyone? part 2 – Ski Big Bear Mountain

Big Bear was a hidden gem. We drove through residential areas and came upon Ski Big Bear Mountain. Compared to Montage Mountain, Big Bear is a smaller, more intimate place. Affordable. Great for beginners and experienced alike. Mondays they close at 4:30, and they are closed Tuesdays & Wednesdays. When we first arrived we were at the top of the mountain near the lifts. There were instructors teaching kids how to snowboard and ski. The proximity to Golf Hill BNB makes it a great choice for a skiing, snowboarding or tubing while visiting.

We had lunch at Summit Restaurant in the lodge. They have an extensive menu. We ordered the burrata cheese plate, fried cheese plate, stuffed avocado and the Quesadilla to share. Everything was delicious. I enjoyed a Bloody Mary, also delicious. Many of the parents were sitting in the lodge warm inside, where they can watch their kids having fun outside.

We will definitely be back next season!

Skiing anyone? Part 1 – Montage Mountain, PA

We have had several guests ask us about local ski places near our country house. So we decided to go and visit the closest few. First we visited Montage Mountain. https://www.montagemountainresorts.com/

So after we ventured into Scranton last Saturday and had an amazing breakfast at Mansours, we headed up to Montage Mountain. It was a beautiful sunny day. The atmosphere was fun with a DJ blasting music, the outdoor firepit, and the food vendors set up. The smell of the BBQ brisket from ‘Food Fire BBQ Tap house’ was mouth watering. Of course even though we had just eaten, we had to order the Brisket over Mac and cheese. So worth it! (and you get 10% off when you show the your lift ticket).

There were ski slopes for all levels. 26 trails from beginner to expert. Come with your own gear or rent. They have a great package for the off days, $30 Ski-for-all on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday includes lift ticket, rentals and group lesson.

We also discovered that in the summer its a water slide park complete with a lazy river. Stay tuned for a blog post on that!

Just down the road are ‘The shops at Montage’. Featured stores like American Eagle Outfitters, Cacique, Chico’s, Christmas Tree Shops, DSW, J.Crew, Loft and many more. They also have a bunch of restaurants if your hungry after the long day of skiing. Food & Fire BBQ-Taproom, Akita Hibachi Sushi, The Gourmet Slice, Harvest Grill and Wine Bar, the Longhorn Steakhouse, Pancheros Mexican Grill, Panera, Starbucks. There is even a Tesla charging stain. And the PNC Field stadium.

So much to do up on Montage Mountain. We had a great day and will be back again soon for some more winter fun. Next we are off to Ski Big Bear Mountain….

Brunch at Mansour’s Market Café & Eatery, Scranton PA

Saturday was a beautiful day for a drive into Scranton. A short drive from Golf Hill BNB. Worth the trip! We found the cutest brunch place. Mansour’s Market Café & Eatery, a family owned and run café. Everywhere we looked there were beautiful surprises from the beautiful tin roof, the cozy window seats, and the antique cash registers. The staff was friendly and very knowledgeable.

The menu had something for everyone. From bagels loaded with lox, cream cheese, with capers and onions, eggs of every style, French toast, waffles and the most delicious oatmeal with your choice of toppings.

Mansours is only open for breakfast and lunch. But I have heard they have a monthly dinner. Can’t wait to experience that!

Our latest guests enjoyed a nice ski weekend while staying at Golf Hill Bed and Breakfast

“We had a blast skiing at Elk Mountain! Was so nice to come back to your cozy home. I love the beautiful wood floors and moldings, the antique doorknobs are incredible. It snowed while we were there and we saw a deer eating under a tree in the yard, so cool! My husband, myself and 2 sons really enjoyed our stay.”

A fun, snowy time for this Florida based family, including skiing and Christmas with extended NEPA family.

Michelle and her lovely family stayed at Golf Hill BNB over the Christmas holiday. Visiting family, but taking time out to enjoy the scenery and to ski at Elk Mountain.

“Great location and host. We felt welcome in Tamra’s mountain home. Beautiful views of the mountains and golf course from the bedrooms, we even saw some deer grazing behind the house! Tamra’s ‘Guidebook’ was helpful in knowing what was available to do around the area. The Black and Brass Coffee shop, Laurel’s Hometown Café, and Yoga International Studio were three places we frequented and they were all less than 2 miles from the house. We had a wonderful time in NE Pennsylvania!”

What’s a little snow?

So I heard a rumor we are getting some snow tomorrow in Honesdale. We always looked forward to some snow each year. And then when we had it we wished for warmer weather. Snow always makes me remember how eager my daughters were, the giggles when they saw the first flakes. The joy as they ran outside all bundled up to play in the snow. Making snow angels, building snowmen, or simply catching snowflakes on their tongue. And don’t get me started on school snow days! We have to remember to enjoy these moments while we have them and cherish the memories we had on Golf Hill on those magical snowy days.

A little warp in the floor…..

One issue we came across when we started this process was an on going leak in our freezer that warped the floor horribly. Rather than rip up the entire floor Darryl and our daughter Sydney patched just the warped pieces. Although they completed it in one weekend it was not an easy task. But they were up for the challenge. It came out so good now the rest of our floor needs a good varnish to look as good as the patch! Now the kitchen is as good as new with a few new appliances. Thank you Darryl and Sydney!

Happy New Year!

What a year this has been. A lot of blood, sweat, tears went into making Golf Hill BNB what it is today. Also a lot of joy and laughter as we spent time together as a family renovating this house. In my upcoming posts I will share with you all the progression from the start until this day.

This is a labor of love and we will be doing many more improvements to come.
